Prabir Trio’s Leap of Faith

Prabir Trio

Richmond, VA based Prabir Trio fuses a high octane rock and roll foundation with an India-inspired delivery. Prabir Mehta’s musical development straddles all things rooted in contemporary guitar and his childhood growing up in India surrounded by a family of classical musicians. The sound ends up as a unique musical broth, taking contemporary guitar laden rock music and blending in Hindi and Gujarati lyrics, electric sitars, raga based riffs, and several other layers inspired by an Indian upbringing. The musicians involved in this project are what makes all this possible. Prabir’s guitar and voice are presented in a harmonious balance between Kelli Strawbridge’s backbeat, Jeremy Flax’s melodic bass rhythms, and Kenneka Cook’s beautiful harmonies. The group has been busy writing and performing music around the southeast while also working on a set of recordings. In 2024 Prabir Trio is very thrilled to partner with Shockoe Records to release one of these new songs. The Richmond based record label will be joining Prabir Trio in ushering in the band’s latest recorded offering, God’s Song.

God’s Song

God, what a topic. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll are still common in music, but occasionally other topics find their way into melodies and hooks. Richmond, VA’s Prabir Trio has seen the light of inspiration and created a song to share with the world. God’s Song is a light hearted look at humanity’s relationship to old world religious expectations. The song is a story about God (not a specific God, but any god) making a return to Earth after a long time away. The song goes on to take the listener through God’s thoughts of humanity’s various impacts on creation. The environment, hierarchy, corporate greed, politics, technological ethics, and even religious leaders themselves are all brought to God’s attention as the bouncy rock song progresses. Through groovy beats, sitar solos, and catchy hooks, the song delivers this divine conundrum to listeners and hopefully leaves something to think about. There is no conclusion, no resolution, no judgment, just awareness.

“This is a really fun song. It’s not meant to offend anyone, it’s just a quick look at how humans have interpreted and ignored some foundational rules that seem contradictory to doctrine and dogma worldwide.” Prabir Mehta says about the new Prabir Trio single. “It’s been a fun conversation I’ve been having with people for years and it finally found its way to some chords.”

Recording and releasing this music takes a big lift. Initially Prabir consulted with religious leaders in the community and professors from various universities. Then the bare bones of the song was crafted and brought to the band. Strawbridge, Flax, and Cook were able to take the song and add in all the musical dynamics needed to carry such a lofty topic for three minutes. The song was recorded in Charlottesville, VA at Mountainside Studio with James McLauglin. The song was then handed to Rich Stine for mixing and post production before being sent all the way over to Sam Kumar of Rose Quartz Mastering for the final stages for the track. Prabir Trio will be joining the roster of Richmond releases already under the collective belts of the Shockoe Records crew on February 29, 2024. This year’s Leap Day is a great chance to take a leap of faith on this new song. God’s Song will be available on all streaming platforms and the physical product, a custom prayer candle - we are not kidding, will be available on March 2nd at the band’s release show. The prayer candle is a unique limited run product, designed by Brent McCormick Designs. These will be available at live shows and on the Shockoe Records website while supplies last.
